The Spirit of God is the very breath of God.  He is the quickening power of God and the blessing that Abraham passed on to his children.  After Yeshua died and was resurrected he breathed on his disciples and said "receive ye the Holy Spirit".  Just like our Father breathed his spirit into us at creation, Yeshua breathes the Spirit of God into believing men and women.  Some men thought they could buy the Holy Spirit and were warned that they were in the galls of bitterness. 

Acts 8:19-23
19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.
20 But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.21 Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God.22 Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.23 For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bitterness, and in the bond of iniquity.  KJV

We can see that the Holy Spirit is vital for us today as we must stand against unparalleled evil in this time. Without the power of God, we would be helpless in this dark time.  The adversary has had 6000 years to learn all our weaknesses. He is far more intelligent than we are. We need the supernatural wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit to defeat this conniving enemy.

In order to pray in the spirit one must be filled with the Holy Spirit.  God has promised to speak mysteries and hidden things to us by praying in the spirit.  1 Cor. 14:2

If you would like to receive the Holy Spirit, you must first accept Yeshua as your Lord and savior.  You must acknowledge that he came to earth as a man, lived a holy life according to the rigid laws of the Hebrew faith, died on a cross as our substitute for sin, suffered a sinner's death in the grave, was there three days and nights bearing sins and sicknesses and then was resurrected by Father God.  If you believe this confess it and ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in other tongues.
